Lesson 4.2 - The Warm Up

Often overlooked by experienced surfers, a good warm up conditions you physically and mentally to approach your surf session. A gentle run to get the blood flowing followed by stretching to increase 'flexibility' combined with deep breathing techniques helps calm the mind and loosens the body.

Increasing flexibility is one of the most beneficial elements to improve your fitness and surfing performance. When your muscles are tight your body movements become restricted or tight. Muscular tightness makes any action require more effort. The more you stretch the more flexible you become. Take a few minutes to stretch before and after each surfing or training session and you will find your body functions more efficiently.

Hold each stretch or posture for at least 10 seconds, a good overall stretching routine should take at least 20 minutes. The longer a stretch is held the more likely the muscles will relax and lengthen. Ensure you work to your own limitations, do not overstretch to the point of feeling pain, ease in to each stretch (don't yank or jerk) breathe out as you increase the intensity of each stretch. Stretch to the point where you feel the muscle tighten.

Yoga is a good discipline and provides all the necessary stretches and breathing techniques that compliment pre surfing preparation. It is also something you can do whilst the surf is flat or after work in the winter darkness, ask at your local gym or sports centre for a registered Wheel of Yoga Class.

Fitness & Balance Training
Balance training on an Indo board
The Indoboard is simple, stable and user friendly. Anybody can ride with a few basic instructions and something to hold onto initially. Learning curve is a mere 10 to 15 minutes for most. After that, Indoboarding becomes routinely easy and fun. The INDO BOARD has been designed to appeal to everyone, ages 4 to whatever. The large surface area provides maximum stability while the INDO rider uses their sense of balance to maneuver the board over the roller in a controlled manner.

Beginners benefit from the stability, which imparts confidence for a fast and fun learning curve. Proficient riders enjoy the large surface area providing plenty of room to move and walk on. The limits of what can be done on the INDO BOARD are far from being reached. Use your imagination and come up with your own tricks and maneuvers.
